The appearance in the Senate of a common elf caused outrage among the old-timers, regardless of the fact that he was pure-blooded. Whispers of discontent spread throughout the grand chamber, and faces contorted into expressions of disgust, as the tall and slender Kai made his way through the ancient arches. In the months that followed, his presence sent out continuous ripples of uneasiness through the stagnant waters of the Senate, his fresh energy disturbing the usual inefficiency of their daily affairs.

Despite the scorn of his elders, the brave elf kept his head held high and persisted in involving himself in the life of Riversar, day after day. Contrary to everyone's expectations, he was rather successful in his endeavours. It was also remarked upon that, in addition to his work for the public good, he enthusiastically practiced magic in his own time. Kai's interests extended far beyond merely elven magic: he also excavated the ruins of the Orcish city of Santar, corresponded with the University of Strongford, and was acquainted with the sages of the Adjalar Oasis. His constant companion in this research was Thea, a young protector of the Sacred Grove.

Just three years went by in this manner, until that fateful day when the hordes of Darkness descended upon the Dominion in full force. And the mages, all of them, were powerless against the dark sorcery. The new and highly dangerous magic spread like cancer throughout the land. One morning, word went round that Kai had suddenly left the kingdom, having informed Thea that he was going to study the new dark magic. The Senate wasted no time in proclaiming him a traitor and banned him from ever returning, not considering for a second that he might have left with the Dominion's best interests at heart... In Riversar, all the talk of the town was about how youngsters like Kai had no respect for Elven culture, and how the ancient magic traditions were being distorted.

So when, six months later, the prodigal mage came back knocking on the city gates, he was met with cold silence. Kai pounded with his fists and shouted with all his might that there were enemies nearby, that he knew how to defeat them, that he had learned to fight the dark magic, and that they needed to work together... But the Senate simply deployed archers on the city walls, with orders to kill the traitor if he even tried to use his magic.

Then, from out of the forest came swarming the hordes of Darkness, heading for the elven capital. The only one standing in their way was Kai. The mage began to cast a spell to repel the attackers and was instantly struck by an archer's arrow. If it hadn't been for the healing rays of Thea, who suddenly appeared on the city wall, it would have all been over. Kai's explosive spheres incinerated several groups of enemies, pushing the hordes back. But then, having exhausted all of her energy on that life-saving spell, Thea's fragile body collapsed and fell from the top of the wall.

Kai ran back and easily caught her, throwing a look towards the city that made the elders painfully aware and ashamed of their attitude. At that moment, they realized that it was not greedy ambition that had made Kai turn to dark magic, but a burning desire to help his people.

After that battle, Kai and Thea never went back to Riversar, and only some years later did they eventually manage to let go of their past grievances. Now they've chosen the path of the Guardians, and continue to use their powers for the greater good!
