The heat was unbearable. Rufus slowly opened his swollen eyes and, with a groan, remembered that he had fallen into a cesspit on his way home after last night's binge. The stench that filled his nostrils was atrocious. "What a stink!" he groaned again, scratched his bloated belly, and rolled over into his other side, trying to return to the sweet bliss of sleep. But time passed, sleep would not come, and Rufus began to accept the fact that he had really woken up. He reached under the couch, grabbed the half-empty bottle he knew was there, and downed it in one. The sun was burning directly overhead, and even the nimble little birds that Rufus loved to watch had hidden in the shade from its scorching rays.
"Booring..." Rufus thought, fishing out a second bottle. "Maybe I should find something to eat?"
Rolling the idea around in his mind, he decided it was a good one. He got up, pulled his shabby trousers into a more or less adequate position, and went in search of food. Thus it was that the master of the house, head still spinning slightly from the night before, entered his kitchen and was met by an bewildering scene: the dining table, which he expected to be carrying just a couple of crusty old morsels of bread, was on the contrary fully laden with a variety of delectable dishes, fine meats, and exotic fruits from every corner of the land, all sparkling dizzyingly before his eyes. Deeply puzzled, Rufus scratched his head and thought for a moment. Was he hallucinating? Had he completely lost his mind this time? However, the rumbling of his belly soon put any further questioning out of his mind, and he sat down and began to gorge himself.
"Good morning!" a chirpy voice rang out suddenly. From a dark crevice in the far corner of the room, a shadow slipped out and deftly leaped onto the table, assuming the form of a slender young man. "It's such a pleasure to meet you, Rufus. My name is Rakashi, I am a merchant of souls." The stranger's gleaming eyes narrowed into a cunning squint as he stared hungrily at the pudgy man.
"You... what the... who are you? How did you get in here?" Rufus choked on his mouthful and reached for the nearest bottle as if it were a lifeline. "And what do you want from me?"
"I'm here to offer you the deal of a lifetime, Rufus. You can have anything you want, whatever your heart desires. And in return, I only ask for a mere trifle, something you don't use and clearly have no need for. You won't even notice it's gone…"
"Get out of here, demon!" Rufus grunted, trying to put on his most menacing look and jerking his head towards the door.
"Now listen, my friend. I'm the only one in this world who thinks that your soul has any worth, the only one that would give you something for it. Nobody else places any value on it, Rufus, don't you see that? So come now, think it over carefully. Such offers don't come every day, you know."
"Maybe he has a point," Rufus reflected. "But this fool doesn't know who's house he's come knocking on." Rufus's usually jovial expression suddenly took on a more business-like air. "Alright, let's do it! I just have one condition."
"Oh really, a condition, really! Let's hear it then!" the demon jeered.
"You'll have to outdrink me," Rufus said in a quiet but firm voice. "If you win, you get my soul. If you lose, you become my servant. Your powers might come in handy, and after all, a little drinking company wouldn't hurt."
Rakashi stifled a chortle and tried to stop his legs from hopping around in glee. No wonder — it's not every day that his victim does all the hard work for him! Rufus went down to the basement for supplies, and the contest began.
Night was already falling by the time that Rufus, still with his wits about him, was attempting to bring the thoroughly intoxicated demon back to the world of the living. Rakashi's bleary eyes looked around him, confusedly trying to understand where he was while he fought back the violent urge to vomit. Above him loomed the nauseating grin of his fat competitor, revelling in the victory.
"A demon always keeps his word, isn't that right, buddy?" the winner laughed gleefully. "Hey, I had an idea: why don't you go and live inside that shield over there, and you can come out when I need you?"
Rufus went over to the ancient shield, a relic from an ancestor, and dragged it back to the half-conscious demon. Rakashi sighed, resigned to his fate, turned into a shadow once again, and obediently slipped inside the shield. There he stayed until the evening, brooding on his bad fortune to have crossed such an iron gut, until Rufus, in need of a drinking companion, summoned him out: "Ohh deeemoon! It's just about time for a drink, don't you think?"
They spent the rest of the night drinking and sharing stories. Rufus turned out to be an excellent conversationalist, and although the demon had never had a friend before, the two soon established a bond.
So it was that the two of them became thick as thieves. After word about the courageous drinker and his magical shield spread around town, the Guardians invited Rufus and Rakashi to join them. Thus, this demon's story took yet another unexpected turn, as he sided with the Light. Funny how things work out, isn't it?
